Bass Fishing for Beginners – How to Choose a Fishing Rod – How to Fish
In this Beginner Bass Fishing video I talk about choosing your first fishing rod. It can be difficult to narrow it down but I talk about what type of rod to look for that goes with the tackle that we chose in the Beginner Tackle Box video.

Beginning bass fishermen listen to gene his videos taught me most of what I know about fishing.. including how to cast a bait caster
Thanks for always making these videos and your patience and detail that you are willing to go into you are the greatest
A little late to the party but glad I found this channel. Decided to added fishing to the retirement activities. Been a long time so I'm basically starting over plus there is lots of new and improved equipment. I like that the videos are short but educational. Better if you were wearing a Bama hat but I'll adjust!
@flukemaster you recommend a medium heavy rod as far as the power? what about the action? fast action or moderate for beginners?
New to fishing! I accidentally got a medium light rod with a 3000 reel. Both lew’s Mach 1. I’m happy with the reel but unsure about the rod. Would this be a decent rod for beginner? I’m a little disappointed since it’s not medium heavy like recommended and I have the 1/4 oz weights and can only use the 1/8 oz weights for the Texas rigs. Any advise or tips are greatly appreciated! Love the videos and they have been super helpful!
I must say in recent years Zebco has stepped their game up. I actually almost exclusively use my 33 Platinum over my baitcaster because it allows me to focus on fishing instead of dealing with those occasional mess ups. 12 pounds of drag and 26" lpt is plenty good enough for how I like to fish. That said a spinning reel is definitely much better for any kind of finesse technique imo, but power fishing I do love my Zebco.
Hello – I'm a beginner fisher. Should the rod be one solid piece, one that pulls apart or is telescoping ok? Thank you for the video
First time fishermen here and I thank you for this video you’ve been damn helpful!
Yo my man.. Why is your thumb double the size
I snapped a zebco at academy one time testing the bend
Is it better to buy rod and reel separately? Like would it be a problem buying a combo?
Thank you!! Keep beginning videos flowing
You recommended 3000 or 4000 reel in the other video. In this video you said 2000- 3000. Which ones pairs with the tackle and 7ft medium heavy rod?
#beginnerfreshwater
I’d like a travel rod in my arsenal but I can’t find any good reviews by somebody I trust. Would you consider doing one?
Alright, so I bought a lake house two years ago (on Lake Jordan in Alabama), but have never fished in my life. I have a boat and love to cruise the water, but hey, if you're living on the water ya might as well learn how to fish, right? Gene, your videos on beginner stuff have been a godsend and I really appreciate you taking the time to make them. God bless ya!
Get a spincast. Best invention ever made for fishing
I know this video is about your very first rod but I have a question about a second rod. Currently I have a 7’ MH bait caster and want to add a spinning rod as well. What length and action would you suggest? My thought was a 6’6”-7’ M or ML. I mainly just want two rods that cover each other’s weaknesses
Thanks
Absolutely loveeee these videos. My heart rate goes up just watching
wow
Great info! New subscriber
What lenght rod you suggest me to use am under 5.6 in height. I'll be top water ive got a few spinner bait plastic and chatter bait
17 thumbs-dowm? Somebodys hit the wrong button?? I just found this channel and it's awesome! I'm learning about 🐟 at age 61 and these basics are exactly what I need. I've purchased several rods and reels and spooled them but mostly naively with what I figured would work. Now, I have a better understanding of matching rod reel and line for the targeted 🐟. Thanks to these vids.
I just want to say , Thank you ! I'm learning how to Bass fish and i really like your video's great information . And you make the video's interesting I don't get bored at all . I will continue to watch your video's and yes i subscribed Thank you again !
Finally! A good video for beginners.
But what reel?
If I were to pick up a 3000 Reel with a Medium Heavy Spinning Rod and use a 12 pound test with size 3/0 to 4/0 hooks for the main rod what would you suggest for a second set up to maybe go after smaller things or use smaller lures? You said a Medium Action Spinning Rod but do you still use a 3000 Reel? Do you go down to 2000 Reel? Going down to a Medium from Medium Heavy do you also go down to an 8 pound test, down to a 1/0 2/0 hook, down to 1/8th ounce spinners, move down to the smaller finesse worms instead of trick worms? Thanks 🙂
What if 6 to 15 lb how heavy it can takes?
Thanks for making this series! You provided so much useful information!
